Complexion in Marriage Biodata: Meaning and What to Write
Many biodata templates have a line called Complexion, and it often leaves people unsure what to write. This guide explains what the field means, the words families commonly use, how to word it respectfully, and why it is perfectly fine to leave it out.
What Is Complexion in a Marriage Biodata?
In a marriage biodata, complexion means skin tone. It usually sits in the personal or physical details section, next to height and sometimes body type or blood group.
The field comes from older printed formats, from a time when photos were not always attached. Today almost every biodata includes a photo, so the complexion line adds very little. It is optional, not a required field.
You may see the field under these names:
- English: Complexion / Skin tone
- Hindi: रंग / वर्ण
- Marathi: वर्ण / रंग
- Bengali: গায়ের রং / গাত্রবর্ণ
Common Terms Used for Complexion
These are the words most families recognise. Pick the one that matches how you would describe yourself, in plain words.
- Dark – In Hindi and Marathi most people simply write साँवला / सावळा
A few notes on these terms:
- Wheatish is the most common entry and a neutral middle description.
- Dusky and Dark are factual descriptions, not negatives. Write them plainly, without words like "but" or "slightly".
- In Bangladesh, উজ্জ্বল শ্যামলা (ujjwal shyamla) is widely used and roughly matches "wheatish".
How to Write Complexion Respectfully
Keep it to one or two neutral words. That is all the field needs.
- Instead of "Very fair" or "Fair and beautiful", write Fair
- Instead of "Wheatish but fair-looking", write Wheatish
- Instead of "Slightly dark" or "Little dusky", write Dusky
- Instead of a shade that doesn't match your photo, write your actual tone, or leave the field out
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Upgrading your complexion. Families will see your photo and meet you. A mismatch between the biodata and the photo creates doubt about everything else on the page.
- Adding praise. "Fair and handsome" or "very beautiful" sounds like an advertisement. Let the photo speak.
- Apologising for it. Words like "but" or "only slightly" suggest something is wrong. Nothing is.
- Using beauty-product language. Terms like "glowing" or "milky" do not belong in a biodata.
Can You Leave Complexion Out?
Yes. Many people now skip it, and it does not make a biodata look incomplete. Leaving it out makes sense when:
- your biodata already has a clear, recent photo;
- you feel the field encourages judging people on colour;
- you are unsure which term fits you.
If a family asks, you can simply say the photo is current. For guidance on other fields people often feel unsure about, see our guide on handling sensitive topics in a marriage biodata.

Complexion in Partner Preferences
Complexion sometimes shows up again in the partner preference section, as in "looking for a fair, tall girl". This is best avoided. It narrows your matches, and many families read it as shallow. Describe values, education and lifestyle instead:
Partner Preference: Looking for an educated, kind and family-oriented partner who values honesty and mutual respect, preferably settled in Maharashtra.

Adding Complexion in the Editor
The free biodata editor does not include a complexion field by default, because a photo usually covers it. If your family wants the line, you can add it as a custom field in the personal details section and type one of the terms above.
